Description

Downhill, Castlerock, Northern Ireland

Perched dramatically on a 120ft cliff top, high above the Atlantic Ocean stands the famous Mussenden Temple. Constructed in 1785 as part of the Downhill Demesne by Frederick Augustus Hervey, Bishop of Derry and Earl of Bristol. The temple was built to serve as a summer library with it’s architecture inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, near Rome. I can only imagine how amazing it must have been for Bishop Hervey when he sat here almost 250 years ago, relaxing whilst reading his books inside this unique temple library.

For this image, I happened to be “In the right place at the right time” to capture this train just entering this tunnel through the cliff directly under the “Mussenden Temple” I’ve captured so many photos of this temple & stretch of train track over the years, yet unfortunately never being lucky enough to capture the train in the actual scene 🙁

This time around I decided to attempt an aerial photograph. By doing a little research on the Translink train times I calculated out when the train may pass through Benone & Castlerock. Arriving early I got the drone into the air & literally hovered above this scene for over 15 minutes. To my delight the train showed up ? So here is the train entering the cliff tunnel, the very photo I was aiming for. A little research goes a long way at times
