Description

Knightstown, Valentia Island, The Ring of Kerry, Ireland

St. John’s was built to a design by the great Irish architect Joseph Wellard 150 years ago. Wellard was master of the art of understatement and produced beautiful little churches which sit so well in their setting. St. John’s is no exception, standing as stunning as it does at the head of the village to greet visitors to Knightstown Valentia Island. Sadly this little church is now closed to regular worship but thankfully is still opened for two months during summer to facilitate holiday makers and for an ecumenical Christmas service.

The beautiful “Sensory Garden” was created in the grounds of St. Johns Church to cater for people with disabilities. The purpose of such a garden is to provide individual and combined sensory opportunities for people that may not normally experience. It focuses on the five main senses such as smell, touch, sight, hearing and taste.
