Description
Port (An Port) Donegal, Ireland
What I love so much about Ireland, is the fact that it’s not only the final destination that holds beauty & interest but the actual roads travelled that lead to your destination. This long lesser travelled road is a prime example of what I’m trying to describe.
For over 10km this dusty old road carves & bends its way through the finest ‘wilds of Donegal’. It’s more a less a narrow single car trail, that for the most part has grass growing along its centre. I have a name for these grassy roads found across Ireland…. “Bearded Roads” ?
This dusty bearded road passes through boggy peat marshes, fresh water mountain streams & some of the oldest thatched cottages to be found on our island, all proudly guarded by wild grazing sheep. There are so many bends & wrong turns but I can guarantee you that behind each wrong turn you will discover more raw beauty than you had ever expected from this small rural corner of west Donegal.
I remember during capture of this photo, thinking there was too much dust & haze in the air, which seemed to be washing the colours out of my composition. However I still captured the scene & during edit realised that this hazy look was how the skies normally around ‘Port’. This phenomena is due to water evaporating off the wet marshes, this large lake & sea spray from the nearby Atlantic ocean. Rural, rugged, dusty & hazy are ingredients required to create the natural beauty I adore chasing ?
