Description
For years I’ve been hoping to see a Basking Shark in our Irish waters. I was recently on another scout for them along the north coast of Donegal with my son Isaac. This time our luck finally changed
It was nearing sunset so light was dwindling fast. On arrival to Fanad Lighthouse I was full of joy to see all these dorsal fins gliding through the ocean’s surface. Finally, we were greeted with a school of these gentle giants swimming and feeding in the calm shallow waters. On this evening me & my son sat as a family, watching this family of sharks in one of Ireland’s most scenic landmarks…. An unforgettable moment i’ll forever cherish
Basking Sharks are the 2nd largest fish in the world! However, they are totally harmless as they are filter feeders who only eat microscopic plankton. They are fascinating to watch as they slowly swim around with their toothless mouths always wide-open filtering the water through their gills.
