Description
Magheraclogher Strand, Bunbeg, Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland
“Cara Na Mara” (Friend of the sea) or “Bád Eddie” or “Eddie’s Boat” are the names given to this old wreck resting on Magheraclougher Beach along Donegal’s Wild Atlantic Way. The “Cara Na Mara” fishing vessel ran into trouble during stormy seas in the early 1970s. The remains of the boat are deteriorating rapidly, especially since June 2009 when the alleged “worst storm in living memory” hit the area. Sadly now one half of the boat is almost gone completely
I grew up visiting this ship with my parents and nowadays I take my own family down to see her. I believe that this wreck has to be the most famous in all of Ireland. I’ve even talked to tourists that travelled all the way from the United States to Donegal just to visit and photograph this shipwreck.
Unfortunately her days are now numbered and she is in really poor condition. It’s only a matter of months before it is broken up & taken by the sea I’m pleased to have visited “Bád Eddie” once more to capture this final photograph before the sea claims it forever. Thankfully “Bad Eddie” will always be remembered through people’s memories & Photographs for generations to come….
