Kinvara, County Galway, Ireland
This picturesque castle stands on Galways Wild Atlantic Way & comprises of a 75 foot tower and defensive wall against a stunning backdrop. Dunguaire Castle was built in 1520 by the Hynes Clan who were a prominent family in the area since 662. In the 17th century the castle was passed onto the Martyn clan of Galway who remained in the stronghold until 1924. It was Oliver St. John Gogarty, a well known surgeon and writer who bought and restored the castle and made it a meeting place for literary greats like George Bernard Shaw, Lady Gregory, J.M Synge and W.B. Yeats.
During my recent visit to Galway, Dunguaire Castle had to be my biggest challenge! As it took me 3 failed sunsets & 3 failed sunrises plus a car breakdown just to capture this one image! Each morning or evening I arrived the sky would just not colour for me and it was either pouring with rain or windy! It was on the 4th sunrise attempt that I finally got this image. I travelled to Kinvara 7 times in total for this, so I guess Number 7 is certainly a lucky number indeed! lol
