Description

Glenade Valley, County Leitrim, Ireland
Standing proudly amongst the Dartry mountain range in North Leitrim can be found this magnificent natural rock formation. Carved by the collapse of melting glaciers 12,000 years ago at the end of the ice age. Measuring a gigantic height of 330 metres, Eagles Rock is the tallest free-standing natural rock structure in all of Ireland.
It may be difficult to visualise, but this mountaintop was once a prehistoric seabed! You can clearly see the many layers of sediment that was deposited on this once sea floor, which in return created this mountain entirely made from the bones and shells of tiny extinct sea creatures. Then over millions of years earth’s tectonic forces slowly compressed it all into limestone and pushed it high into the sky.
Even today you can find seashells and marine fossils along the top of these mountains. It’s even imaginable that there are remains of giant sharks and possibly dinosaurs along this mountain top 🦈 Just let that sink into your mind for a moment when you gaze upwards into the sky at these cliffs that once also sheltered Golden Eagles……
