Description
Ballycastle, County Antrim, Northern Ireland
Fairhead is a 600 ft dolerite columned cliff face carved by the same volcanic forces that created the nearby ‘Giants Causeway’ over 60 million years ago. Fairhead towers over the ‘Sea of Moyle’ made famous by the myth ‘The Children of Lir’. This tale states that 4 children were put under an evil spell that turned them into swans, they then spent 300 years floating these turbulent waters below this cliff, unable to come ashore until the spell was finally broken ?
Some ‘Game of Thrones’ TV series fans may instantly recognise this location, as it filmed alot for the grand finale of the series. This is where Jon Snow, one of the heroes, finally meet Daenerys & her dragons at Dragonstone ?
I’m delighted to have reached this unique cliff face only a few days ago, as this was a photo I was visualising & planning to capture for near 4 years now! But each time I planned to go, something always caused me to cancel. I’d never visited before & personally not seen a lot of photos from ‘Fairhead’. All I knew was that I wanted the entire cliff face in one photo & that was my only goal.
Thankfully on arrival the wind & light was in my favour, so I managed to get my panoramic photo on the 1st visit. I’m more than grateful to nature & higher forces when things work especially after so long planning & hoping. Fingers crossed the rest of my “photo location checklist” goes as planned ?
