Description
Killala, County Mayo, Ireland
The most striking feature at the heart of Killala town is the Round Tower in its centre towering over all other buildings. It is of late date – probably the 9th to 11th century.
It is also considered to be one of the best round towers in the country and indicates the ancient celebrity of the place as an ecclesiastical centre.
The foundation of the Killala diocese dates from the time of St Patrick who placed his disciple St Muredach over the church – called in IrishCell Alaid.
Muredach’s appointment to the Church of Killala dates back as early as 442 or 443 AD
