Description
Ballyness Bay, Falcarragh, County Donegal, Ireland
The meandering Magheroarty Beach reaches 3km from the mainland stretching its long sandbar outward into the Atlantic ocean, almost like a giant octopus arm seeking an anchor point. As you can see this beach has three sandy shores facing north, east & west. Almost 360 degrees of sandy shore on one beach which is bliss! as there are few other beaches elsewhere which yield this amount of sandy shore
Tucked away safely behind these giant protecting sand dunes of Magheroarty is Ballyness Bay. An area of outstanding natural beauty created by several rivers leading out to sea. This estuary holds some of the strongest turquoise-coloured waters found throughout Ireland. Water as clear as glass due to the purity of cool freshwater rivers which filter down through mountains into this bay daily. All protected by these magnificent sand dunes which run the entire length of the shoreline. Ballyness Bay overlooks many islands, beaches and mountains along Donegal’s north-western shore such as Magheroarty, Inishbofin, Inishdooey and Tory
Here on the distant horizon line can be seen the Derryveagh mountain chain also known as the ‘Seven Sisters’ due to its distinctive seven peaks seen clearest from this sea angle. This range starts with Muckish on the left then between is Crocknalaragagh, Ardloughnabrackbaddy, Aghla Beg, Aghla Mor & Mackoght, ending with Errigal Mountain on the right
This landscape speaks for itself with its sheer number of sandy beaches, mountains & islands all along this northern Donegal shore. There’s something very special about this natural area of beauty that strikes sheer excitement in me during every visit
