Chasing Storm Denis: Day 2 ?
As you may know by my recent posts, I have been chasing 2 different storms over the past week for 4 days in total. Yesterday was the end of ‘Storm Denis’ & boy did he go out with a bang! I decided to climb to the top of ‘Slieve League Cliffs’ to gain a view of this stunning landmark in its entirety during the storm. Out of the past few days storm chasing this was by far the strongest. I got blew off my feet a few times but was careful to keep away from the edge.
At over 2000 ft high! these magnificent cliffs are amongst the highest sea cliffs in Europe. They stand almost three times higher than the more famous ‘Cliffs of Moher’ in County Clare. Remarkably there are remains of an early Christian monastic site on the sides of these cliffs. These remains consist of a chapel & some beehive huts. Even older stone tools & remains were uncovered on these cliffs that suggest that it was a site of ancient worship even before the arrival of Christianity.
