Description

City Walls, Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland

This present building “St Augustine’s Church” was constructed in 1872 and was purposely designed in the same style as a 13th Century Gothic church. St. Augustine’s Church is locally known as the “Wee Church on the Walls” and is believed to be built on the actual site of the 6th Century monastery that was founded here by Saint Colmcille on 546 A.D. The monastery then remained in the hands of the federation of Columban churches who regarded St. Colmcille as their spiritual mentor. (St Columb’s Cathedral can also be seen here in the background)

It is a wonderful feeling just to stand here at this very peaceful spot, right in the centre of a large bustling city and to think that the entire city was constructed around this very small church due to its connection to Saint Colmcille almost 1500 years ago! This historical location played a massive part in the spread of Christianity throughout Ireland & deserves our utmost respect
