Description
Gortin, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland
On a normal road just like any other road, you could easily drive past this large patch of forest on the roadside & see nothing of interest. Thousands pass each year & don’t even realise what lies hidden at its heart. Nothing can be seen from any angle on the outside other than tall dense fir trees.
However this is what lies completely “hidden in plain sight” from everyone for years! Located near Gortin in County Tyrone this was once a popular outdoor museum called the ‘Ulster History Park’. It was first opened in 1990. Constructed to include a monk’s round tower, 2 castles, mills & various houses, standing stone circles, wedge/portal tombs, an artificial lake & island dwelling all built to show visitors what life here in Ireland was like thousands of years ago.
I remember visiting this amazing park as a child & some of my most memorable family moments are from here. Sadly it closed its doors almost 20 years ago. Nothing was ever touched, all was left just as it was on that very day. Ever since Mother Nature has started to slowly re-consume the entire park. It still looks absolutely stunning even more so now that it’s overgrown, as it really looks like you are looking back in time to how ancient Ireland once was. In my opinion it’s now a little Lost Kingdom…..
It’s that time of year again my dear friends & family that I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. I would also like to thank you all for following & supporting my work throughout the year. It means so much to me ?
