Inis Oírr Island or Inisheer, Aran Islands, Ireland, County Galway
Just imagine an island with hundreds of small lush green patchwork fields separated by high hand built dry stone walls as far as the eye can see… the very moment I stepped off the ferry I just knew that “Inisheer” was going to be a magical island. I’ve been all over Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way Way but this island has to be the finest preserved places that really lets you experience how our previous generations lived hundreds of years ago.
To gain the true feel of Inisheer, I travelled all over this island via pony & trap. Ive a funny story ill now share with you We approached the base of a very steep hill & the driver stopped the cart. He ever so politely looked at me & said “you will now need to get out and help push the cart up this hill” I honestly thought he was having a laugh with me, but no he was in fact very serious! It turns out the cart with us both in it was too much weight for this poor wee pony to haul up such a steep brae so the only way possible was to walk alongside the cart whilst giving it a few pushes here & there to bare the weight until we reached the top where I was finally able to get back in again, embarrassingly panting for my breath! Lol
In my personal opinion pony & trap is the only way to travel around this amazing island with a summer breeze on your face, the smell of burning turf in the air near every stone cottage and the sound of the ponies hooves clip-clopping off the road. It’s these very senses & my unique cart ride that will keep Inisheer so magical & memorable to me….
