Description

Scollydoogan, Gola Island, County Donegal, Ireland

Gola Island is roughly 1 mile from the mainland along Donegal’s Wild Atlantic Way. Gola has been uninhabited since the 1960’s & actually had no running water nor mains electricity until 2005! Nowadays the only evidence of the Island’s heritage remains are the ruins of dry stone cottages of families who have long since moved to the mainland. Thankfully a few cottages have been renovated exactly to their period look into holiday homes for the ancestors of the once residents of this small island.

On the far north of Gola Island is found this truly magnificent sea arch. It was a steep careful descend to the sea level from the cliff top to capture this low angle. However it was truly worth the aching hike back up the cliff slope & all the joint pains the following day! Lol If you look to the horizon you will notice a second sea arch. This arch is actually on the neighbouring “Umfin Island” As I have said on countless previous posts of mine “I adore the colours & textures within the rocks along our coast” In my own opinion most of these details can not be found elsewhere in nature.
