Description

Classiebawn, Mullaghmore, County Sligo, Ireland

If you travel the length & breadth of Ireland, you will find no other castle or building that rivals the almost fairy-tale scene of “Classiebawn Castle” in Sligo. Seated perfectly on a hilltop on the edge of Sligo’s Wild Atlantic Way overlooking the ocean, whilst nestled in the shadow of Ireland’s most iconic table top mountain Benbulbin. The initial architects & builders sure nailed the perfect spot to build a stunning castle that would mesmerise onlookers for centuries afterwards!

Classiebawn Castle is a Baronial style country house completed for Viscount Palmerston in 1874 on what was formerly a 10,000-acre estate. This estate of land once belonged to the Irish but was confiscated by the English Parliament over 400 years ago. During the Irish Rebellion in 1916 the Castle was commandeered and used as a barracks for the Free State Irish Army, who flew their flags there and protected the Castle from damage throughout the Rebellion. When the Rebellion ended the Castle was handed back intact to its English landlord ‘Lord Mount Temple’ However 7,000 acres of its surrounding agricultural land was reclaimed by the local Irish.
