Offshore Mullet Peninsula, County Mayo, Ireland
Finding a place in Ireland or even internationally in this day & age that remains almost totally unchanged for millennia can be like “trying to find a needle in a haystack”. Yet on the western coast of County Mayo, that elusive place has been hiding in plain sight!
On the shore you can see the remains of an old village & church. This island was sadly abandoned in 1937 after a massive storm a few years prior took the lives of almost all the men on the island who were fishing at the time. The remaining women & children could not survive alone so migrated onto the mainland.
Inishkea Island is relatively low lying, meaning everywhere is covered in a fine pure white sand often blown into drifts by the strong winds. The Atlantic Ocean surrounding this island is crystal clear which reflects the most stunning shades of emerald green & turquoise blue your mind could ever visualise. In-fact some of the clearest waters I have ever set eyes on our shore. I honestly could have sat here on this spot for hours just gazing into the colours of the water but unfortunately my boat was leaving & I had to leave on it ☹ This photo reminds me on that amazing day I spent here. I can’t wait to soon return to Inishkea Island ?
