Description
Dunree Head, Inishowen Peninsula, Buncrana, County Donegal, Ireland
On the western coast of the Inishowen peninsula stands the old ruins of Fort Dunree. Originally a Napoleonic-era fort in 1813 then updated for service in WWI/WWII to guard over Lough Swilly. Nowadays its only battle is against the elements, as almost a century of our fine Irish weather is gradually eroding this fort back into the ground in which its building materials came from.
Fort Dunree is now an outdoor museum and all of its old tin huts, canons and this concrete hilltop fort remain exactly as they were left many years ago, when all was decommissioned. There is a stunning walk up through the old buildings and along the top of this hill overlooking the stunning horseshoe beach of Port Bán or Dunree Bay with the majestic Hills of Urris shadowing over it. Dunree Head is of the most uniquely picturesque locations to be found in Ireland, where historic ruins are eternally fused together within our beautiful ancient landscape…..
