Last night I captured our Harvest supermoon rising over the beautiful ‘Grianan Ring Fort’ ancient monument. A tricky composition to pre-calculate using astro/moon alignment apps to find the exact spot to stand at the exact time. Then the camera and lens all on tripod had to be composed, focused and pre-set with the exact manual settings. Then after all this ….. it’s a nervous waiting game in anticipation that I got my calculations correct
When the moon suddenly rises over the fort you have mere minutes to run left or right to recompose and hopefully capture the moon exactly over the centre of the stone fort. Any error at all and the moment would be missed! It can take months (weather permitting) to wait on another opportunity. Admittedly my research and pre-planning was not absolutely the way I planned this time as I honestly wanted the moon a little lower touching the fort, however I am still delighted with my capture 🌕
The mystical and magical seat of power were once Kings & Queens of Ireland reigned from ‘An Grianan Aileach’. Grianan ring fort is the best known monument in Inishowen and easily one of the most recognisable in Ireland. Situated along Donegal’s Wild Atlantic Way on a hilltop 800 feet above sea level the view from Aileach is breathtaking. The fort was first constructed around 1700 BC. Legend states that the giants of Inishowen (Princes of Aileach) are lying sleeping here but when the sacred sword is removed, they will spring to life reclaiming their ancient lands
