Kinbane Head, Ballintoy, Castlerock, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, UK
Kinbane Castle is was built in 1547 and is in an exceptional location surrounded by the North Atlantic sea, The castle was constructed on a limestone headland which protrudes out from below the overlying basalt cliffs, the headland has a sea cave passing through the centre directly under the castle.
I have always found Kinbane to be a magical and haunting location where you can almost feel the past, especially as evening fall and the cliffs darken, I have many times felt a sense of foreboding as if someone was watching from the cliff tops. This location is soaked in history and myths and legends such as “The Children of Lir” where 4 children were turned into swans by their jealous stepmother and remained as swans for 300 years swimming around this very castle where they once lived in! Finally the curse was removed by a Monk
