Description
Koram Hill, Strabane, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland
As mentioned on a few of my recent posts, I’ve been eagerly awaiting our first snowfall in nearly a year & last night at midnight it briefly arrived! Not wasting a moment, the 4×4 was loaded with my gear & I hit the highest nearby hill for a few wintry scenes before it melted away. The snow on Koram hill was thick & the full moon was so bright that a torch was not needed to see in what should have been pitch dark ?
This old broadcast tower always makes a great composition especially at night. I love how its red lights reflected off the surrounding mist & snow. What was truly amazing is how the moon light was so bright! which reflected off the fresh snow brightening up the entire hillside almost like daytime. Both these man-made & natural sources of light reflected/blended perfectly together adding some colour to what may have been otherwise a very dark scene ?
Constructed in 1963 this television broadcast tower stands 1,002 ft high, which today still the record for the tallest structure in all of Ireland! Located a few miles from my home it is respected by the folk in Strabane & surrounding areas. If you live in our town & are returning home from a trip, this broadcast tower is always the first thing you see from a great distance on your return. It may be an old iron reception tower to the onlooking stranger, but to us it’s a landmark icon of our little town of Strabane. Tv mast
