Noctilucent Clouds (NLC) are a rare phenomenon caused by astronomical light reflecting off ice crystals in our atmosphere’s highest clouds. This causes these clouds to glow at night. Noctilucent means “night shining” in Latin.
I set out late yesterday evening in hope to capture a sunset or something to mark our ‘Summer Solstice’ which is the longest day in the year. The sunset wasn’t great so instead I decided to wait it out to see if any interesting Astro opportunities raised, as I knew these NLC clouds were predicted.
Slightly before midnight the sky illuminated brightly to the naked eye for around 15 minutes. I climbed a wall, set up & balanced my tripod/camera to get this photograph. Moments later all diffused away…. so I’m delighted to have captured this one photo “In the nick of time”
