Description
Tory Island, County Donegal, Ireland
Yesterday I finally travelled to Tory Island for my very first time, in search of the Puffin bird in which I have never sighted before. Lying 9 miles offshore north Donegal, Tory Island or ‘Toraigh’ is Ireland’s most remote inhabited islands. Due to this remote location & high sea cliffs, Tory makes a perfect habitat for this stunning colourful bird, which only nests on very few islands around our coast.
I spent 5 hrs on Tory hiking across the cliff tops of ‘East Town’ on the island. I searched each cliff edge until my eyes strained yet saw no puffins. My conclusion was that nesting season was over & all was too late. However, whilst zooming in to capture a sea gull on a rock face, a small head suddenly peeked out of what looked like a rabbit hole burrow!
I couldn’t believe my luck as it was indeed a Puffin! I did not research prior visiting & never knew these little birds burrowed holes into the rock face to nest & hide! Within moments this partner Puffin flew in from sea with a beak full of fish to feed its family. One of my most memorable & happiest moments in photography
