Description
Falcarrah, County Donegal, Ireland
It is believed that St Fionnán founded the original Church here next to Ray River during the 6th century. For such a small Church it is very significant, with strong historical ties to two of Ireland’s most influential Saints, St Colmcille & St Fionnán.
If you look inside this old church, you can see a giant High Cross. This is the largest stone cross in Ireland, measuring 21ft in height & 7ft wide. Locally known as St Colmcille’s Cross, legend says it was cut from one solid rock on the slopes of Muckish Mountain. St Colmcille was planning to take this cross to Tory Island(seen in the distance). Instead as a thank you, he gifted it to St Fionnán who had previously found St Colmcille’s lost Holy Gospel Book
