Glencar Lake, County Sligo/Leitrim border, Ireland

Growing on the slopes of Tomór Mountain on the shore of Glencar Lake can be found this gigantic Celtic or Sylvan Trinity love knot, also known as a Triquetra. Planted in the mid 1980s by Jim McCabe and his Family, Jim privately funded and planted this Trinity Knot simply for everyone to enjoy its beauty for many generations. Their goal was certainly achieved, as the Trinity Knot amazes everyone who observes it over the past 40 years.

Two species of conifer trees were used to achieve this design. Sitka Spruce was used for the surrounding woods as they are evergreen and remain green in colour all year round. Japanese Larch was used for the trinity knot itself as during autumn they change a yellow colour, thus leaving behind this almost miracle symbol.

The McCabe family plotted the Trinity Knot design on this hill using white material, ground pegs and a two-way radio to give instructions from the opposite end of Glencar Lake. The ‘Emery Celtic Cross’ in Donegal was created by the same methods and was possibly inspired by this very creation 🙏
